New Toy Day

When both of my boys were really young, say from sitting or crawling age upwards, I had this thing called "New Toy Day". It worked a treat and goes like this.

It's not possible to have every baby or kids toy out every day. So I used to rotate them but I would save it for when I was having a bad day. I had a separate box with different toys in it. When the littlies are starting to wear me down and I'm ready to tilt, guess what..."It's new toy day". Pack all the current toys away and bring the others out. Sometimes, my kids would be busy for an hour or two playing with their "new" toys. This was a great tactic for me and really helped out on those days when you have been up all night and need a bit of free time and less stress to get through the day..

The new toy day has changed a bit now the kids are older. Each fortnight (which is how often our family gets paid) I allocate a few dollars for buying something to throw up into a box in the cupboard for when we are having a bad day with the kids. Some examples of this are:

  • a new colouring book or activity book
  • Some beads for threading,
  • a new colour paint (glitter or flourescent)
  • paddlepop sticks
  • stickers
  • a new book (my kids are crazy about Mr Men books and these are quite reasonably priced)
  • new markers
  • a set of cheap dominos (these were a huge hit!)

Some days these things hidden in the cupboard can be a saviour if you kids are at each others throats due to school holidays or rainy weather. And how good is this one....this is one of our favourites! Next time you're at the supermarket, pick up a few extra cardboard boxes of different sizes. Isn't it the old saying....spend $100 on a flash toy and they'll get more excitement out of the box! Well, why not give it to them! Our 2 loved cardboard boxes...and still do. They paint, them, pretend to go to sleep in them, hide in them...you name it and all from a cardboard box! They're FREE! So grab some next time you're at the shops!!

This is not an exhaustive list. Keep checking back as we'll be continually updating!!
